Touring the Highlands of Atauro Island

Saturday, April 11, 2015

We’ve grabbed Barry (the resort owners’) 4wd and Glenn, who is checking water pumps, so we’re having an Atauro Island tour! There’s basically just two roads on the island, neither sealed. One goes along half the east coast and one cuts into the mountains and runs along the ridges. We went on them all. Glenn is maintaining spring water pumps through the highlands and this trip was to check the installations, one of which was known to be not working. The roads are very rough, steep and narrow.

We constantly met groups of locals, mostly walking the 90 minute trip to the Saturday market in Beloi, where we’re staying. They might walk to market with a hand of bananas to sell for $1, so they could buy something in exchange. In the hills, a high percentage of the locals had two-metre spears and they looked like they knew how to use them.
